About Lafayette, Louisiana

The town began life as Vermilionville, then was renamed for a French hero, General Lafayette. A better choice by far, especially in hindsight, for his help in America’s Revolutionary War.

Louisiana being the location, food is an important part of life in Lafayette, the Cajun and Creole cultures being dominant.

You’ll love the names here. Sports venues include the Cajundome and Cajun Field. The Rajin’ Cajuns and the Bayou Bulls make sense, but the Ice Gators’ name makes me want to scratch my head. Poetic license, I suppose. Boudreaux says, “there’s no ice in Louisiana. It’s hot down here.” And, he's right.

Arts are on display at the Acadian Center for the Arts, the Hillard University Art Museum, and the Alexandre Mouton House Museum. The Louisiana Native Crafts Festival lives on in Lafayette in the Festivals Acadiens. In spring the Festival International promises an enjoyable, free music and arts festival here.
